Not a designer, but I know what I (don’t) like...

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

My goal is to get this site to the point at which I can be comfortable that the design is at an acceptable minimum level. Being at the stick-figure level as an artist/designer, that bar might be rather low, but at least I’d like to have a more-or-less “clean” design. Getting into real web-design may be a project for another time (or another life...).

So, got rid of the background, set headings / themes which are at least consistent, and shifted the formatting. Also starting to have a vague understanding of how the design tool works – I’ll probably dig into the actual code at some point, but not now.

Disclaimer: While I was once a code-jockey, it was a VERY long time ago, and everything was different. I originally learned to code using Pro*C on Oracle (running on Aviion Unix – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviion), and later used PL/SQL. I’ve also used several scripting languages and did a fair bit of SQL, but the only web page I ever wrote was a VERY basic, hand-coded sample page which only ever existed on my desktop.

At any rate, I think I will soon reach the point at which I can consider the page version 1.0, and will start to focus more on writing.

About what, you may ask? Well, my thought was to simply describe what I’ve been doing in my “spare” time during the Covid-19 lockdown. While still working full time (and more), and working on a number of other things, we were struggling a bit with our wifi – and that’s what started my on this path.

But first, maybe a bit on podcasts. While only starting to listen to podcasts about two years ago, I now listen quite a bit. I find them great for tasks which require that I move around, or which require eyesight, but not necessarily hearing. For example, driving, laundry, cleaning, etc – all take time, but that time can be usefully spent listening. I think I may do small write-ups on some of the (SFW) podcasts I listen to, and maybe make some recommendations. I have learned an enormous amout already, and there is a vast amount of material out there.

That’s all for today, though. I’m actually eager to post this, so I can see exactly how the page formatting will shift around.

#TIL how to set a favicon and name my site.

Cheers!
